In my experience, most of us don’t like to suffer. The more painful it gets out here, the more inclined we are to move inside: inside our homes, communities, and selves. This is especially true on our spiritual journeys, where we are wondering about big questions of meaning and purpose and perception and life in an attempt to escape the suffering. There were days of outrage, when I didn’t want to feel at ease, or be responsible for my own peace and emotional state anymore. I got tired of being all spiritual and cool about it.
